Tell us about yourself and how are you involved with FIRST?
My name is Serra Erol, and I am currently a 3rd-year student at Yeditepe University’s Faculty of Business. My involvement with FIRST began when I joined IRS 5993 as the PR Captain. Over time, I took on additional responsibilities, including becoming Team Captain, and later serving as the head Emcee at the 2024 FRC Bosphorus Regional. It was at this event that I met Blair Hundertmark, FIRST’s lead Emcee and game announcer, with whom I have stayed in contact. His mentorship led me to be invited to Emcee other regional events, making me one of the prominent Emcees in Turkey. I am also proud to be a member of the FRC Turkey planning committee, where I contribute to shaping the future of FRC events in our country. Over the years, I have committed myself to promoting FIRST in my school, mentoring FLL teams, and volunteering at FLL Jr. tournaments.
How has FIRST helped you accomplish your goals?
FIRST has been a transformative experience for me, helping me develop leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. My time with IRS and my role as Emcee have taught me how to manage challenges and connect with a wide range of people. These skills were critical when I was offered the position of Guest Relations Agent at a hotel in Antalya. Through FIRST, I learned how to handle complex situations calmly and effectively, skills I now apply in my professional life. Being part of the FRC Turkey planning committee has also allowed me to give back to the FIRST community by helping shape events that inspire others.
Do you recall any special experiences or challenges?
One particularly memorable challenge was organizing “Natural Disaster” conferences in partnership with the Turkish Red Crescent (KIZILAY). We reached over 2,080 people, spreading awareness about disaster preparedness. This project was even recognized by the local government, earning me a certificate from the Şişli district governorship. Another special moment for me was serving as the head Emcee at the 2024 FRC Bosphorus Regional. Meeting Blair Hundertmark and receiving invitations to Emcee other events in the FIRST community was a significant turning point for me, highlighting how FIRST connects people across the globe.
Why do you think FIRST is important for females?
FIRST is incredibly important for females because it breaks down stereotypes about who can excel in STEAM. As a woman in leadership roles within FIRST, I have seen firsthand how empowering it can be to challenge societal norms and inspire other young women to pursue their passions. FIRST offers a platform where girls can build confidence, solve complex problems, and prove that there are no limits to what they can achieve. This kind of environment is crucial for developing the next generation of female leaders in STEAM.
What are your goals for the future?
Looking ahead, my primary goal is to continue spreading the values of FIRST in every space I occupy. After graduating, I plan to stay involved in the FIRST community by mentoring teams and volunteering through the Fikret Yüksel Foundation (FYF). I also want to integrate the skills and values I have learned through FIRST into my career, whether it’s through social responsibility projects or business initiatives. Additionally, I aim to continue serving as a FIRST Emcee, bringing excitement and inspiration to more events. My role on the FRC Turkey planning committee will also allow me to help shape the future of FIRST in my country.
What advice would you give to the younger generation of girls interested in STEAM fields?
To young girls interested in STEAM, my advice is simple: never underestimate your potential. The road may be difficult at times, but every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, take on leadership roles, and never shy away from learning. FIRST is a great place to develop your skills, so take full advantage of the opportunities it offers. Whether your interests lie in science, art, or business, you can combine these passions to create something meaningful.
Do you have a woman you look up to/is your role model? If so, who is it and why?
I have been fortunate to look up to many inspiring women, but one of my biggest role models is the late Grace Hopper. As a pioneering computer scientist, she was not only instrumental in the development of early programming languages but also shattered countless barriers for women in technology. Her perseverance and innovative spirit continue to inspire me as I navigate my own path in STEAM. Like her, I hope to break down barriers and show that women can succeed in any field they choose.
