Tell us about yourself and how are you involved with FIRST?

Hi! My name is Amyra Taneja, I am a high school senior and have been in FTC for three years. One of the projects I am most proud of in FTC is the m.e. FIRST initiative, which aims to spread awareness of menstrual equity within robotics. The X BOTS are a face of FTC for the m.e. FIRST initiative, in which we work with over 200 teams in the United States. I was able to spread FIRST in my community through various free summer camps that incorporated STEAM in various fun activities, targeting the younger generation and building their interest in robotics. Outside of robotics, I am a part of many school activities. I have been playing tennis for five years and have been on my high school tennis team for four years, where I am the junior varsity team captain. I am also a part of many clubs in my school. I am the president of the UNICEF club at my high school, another club I am very involved in is HOSA, where I am the leader of the National Marrow Bone Program at my high school.

How has FIRST helped you accomplish your goals?

FIRST has played a tremendous role in shaping the person I am today. Through the experiences it has provided, I’ve had the opportunity to build lifelong friendships and participate in truly unforgettable moments. Being part of this community has helped me grow my confidence, particularly when it comes to communicating with others and expressing my ideas. It has pushed me out of my comfort zone, allowing me to develop not only as a team member but also as an individual, better prepared for both personal and professional challenges.

Do you recall any special experiences or challenges?

The biggest challenge I faced before joining FIRST was my desire to be part of a robotics team while struggling to find one that offered equal opportunities. I was searching for a team that aligned with my goals and could help me grow, but it was much harder than I expected. Then I came across FIRST, and as I learned more about it, I realized it was the perfect place for me to grow both as a person and in my passion for robotics.

Why do you think FIRST is important for females?

I think that FIRST is important for females because STEAM is a very male-dominated field, and I believe that FIRST is an incredible program to get anybody involved in FIRST, as I’ve personally been able to see women on not only my team but in the community around me grow as leaders. I am so grateful that I have been able to have been a part of a program where I learned from those around me and gained a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I could not be prouder to be a part of FIRST.

What are your goals for the future?

My future goals are to become an occupational therapist, where I can help individuals gain confidence in themselves. I’m passionate about making a meaningful impact on people’s lives, and I believe occupational therapy is a career that allows me to do that in a hands-on, compassionate way. Alongside this, I also want to continue giving back to the community by volunteering with FIRST. It’s helped me grow so much, and I want to help inspire and support the next generation of students the way I was. Balancing both will allow me to combine my passion for helping others with my love for STEAM and education.

What advice would you give to the younger generation of girls interested in STEAM fields?

My advice to the younger generation of girls interested in STEAM fields is to never underestimate your potential. It’s easy to feel outnumbered or doubt your abilities, but remember that you bring a unique perspective and valuable skills to the table. Surround yourself with supportive mentors and peers who encourage your growth, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or take on challenges. Even if things seem difficult, push through, because every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow. Finally, always believe in your ideas and your voice—what you have to offer is just as important as anyone else’s. Stay curious, stay determined, and trust that you belong in STEAM.

Do you have a woman you look up to/is your role model? If so, who is it and why?

Yes, my mom is the woman I look up to the most. She’s incredibly strong and determined, and she inspires me every day. No matter what challenge she faces, she approaches it with confidence and always follows through on what she sets her mind to. Watching her persevere and accomplish her goals has taught me the importance of hard work, resilience, and believing in myself. She’s been my biggest supporter and has shown me by example that I can achieve anything if I stay focused and committed. I strive to embody the same strength and determination in everything I do.
